Senior-Focused Digital Accessibility
Our patient community includes many senior adults (60+) managing chronic kidney disease and hypertension. We have built this site from the ground up with high-contrast typography (13.6:1 AAA), large touch targets, and straightforward telephone booking without frustrating portal logins.
1. Our Commitment to Universal Access
At Kidney Specialist Inc., we are committed to providing an accessible, barrier-free digital experience for all patients, family members, caregivers, and referring clinical staff across Madera and Fresno counties.
2. Technical Standards & Legal Framework
Our web development follows recognized accessibility standards and federal healthcare non-discrimination rules:
- W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 & 2.2 Level AA: Full conformance across all pages, with body text exceeding Level AAA contrast thresholds.
- HHS Section 504 (Rehabilitation Act of 1973): Ensuring effective communication and equal digital access for individuals with disabilities in healthcare programs.
- Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA Title III): Public accommodation digital accessibility compliance.
3. Concrete Accessibility Features
High Contrast Ratio (13.6:1 AAA)
Deep ink type (#2c2620) on warm cream background (#faf3e8) exceeds the WCAG AAA 7:1 standard for maximum readability.
16px Typography Floor
Body copy defaults to 17px (1.0625rem) with generous line-height (1.7) for older readers.
44x44px Touch Targets
All tappable buttons, phone CTAs, and language toggles adhere to WCAG 2.2 SC 2.5.8 touch target dimensions to accommodate reduced fine motor control.
Keyboard Navigation & Skip Links
Every route includes a skip-to-main-content link, logical tab sequences, and high-visibility 3px focus rings with dark-band color inversion (.focus-on-dark).
4. Native Accessibility Architecture (Zero Third-Party Overlays)
We do not utilize third-party automated accessibility widget overlays (such as AccessiBe or UserWay), which often disrupt screen reader navigation. Accessibility is implemented directly in native, semantic HTML elements (<main>, <nav>, <details>, <summary>, ARIA attributes).
5. Bilingual Accessibility
All patient educational guides, 24-hour urine collection protocols, and appointment instructions are accessible in both English and Spanish with real-time bilingual toggles and full screen-reader language metadata tagging (lang="es").
